Did You Know?
Can’t Follow Along? Sing a Song: Straining to figure out what people are saying is exhausting. Luckily, just singing along to any music you’re listening to, or even creating your own song, will help with conversational focus. In a 10-week study from Canada’s Ryerson University, middle-aged women (it helps for men as well) who sang two hours per week, just 17 minutes per day, found it 20 percent easier to focus and understand people in conversation. Singing trains the brain to look for specific notes, sharpening the ability to hear sounds in speech.
Steps For a Healthier Heart: 1) Start Fidgeting: Yes, you may have been told to sit still as a child, but that was then. Heart disease studies in the UK compared women who habitually sat still with women who regularly fidget (e.g., swinging legs, tapping toes, shifting weight) while seated. Over 12 years of follow-up, fidgeters developed heart disease significantly less frequently than women who sat still. Why?Fidgeting is a physical activity, and every bit of movement helps. (Joel Kahn, MD. Wayne State University School of Medicine.)
2) Drink 2 Cups of Hibiscus Tea Daily: The hibiscus plant is a significant source of antioxidants. Hibiscus tea tops the ranking for antioxidant power, even beating Macha (a drink made from powder green tea leaves), according to NutritionFacts.org. Hibiscus tea also lowers cholesterol and blood pressure, according to a randomized controlled trial reported in the Journal of Human Hypertension. At the end of the trial, 21% of participants had normalized their blood pressure.
3) Walk Barefoot in the Grass: Growing evidence reveals that direct contact of your body with the earth (called grounding or earthing) helps your heart, eases inflammation, and can create a healthier circulatory system. The connection helps reduce blood viscosity – elevated viscosity hinders the delivery of oxygen to blood cells. Going barefoot for 30 –40 minutes a day may reduce the risk of cardiac events, according to the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.
Inspirational Quotes
"I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
What’s the one limiting belief you have that, if gone, could set your life on fire?
It’s not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do for themselves, that will make them successful human beings.
Excuses are pretty little lies that we tell ourselves to make us feel better about the decisions that don’t serve us.
Testimonials
I had thought about starting the certification program at MIOH for many years before finally taking the leap of faith and beginning my first module. Despite the warm welcome from my classmates and instructors, I was paralyzed by fear and doubt. I questioned whether I could even make it through the first module. I stuck with it, and with each new skill we learned in class, I shifted from panic to curiosity and excitement. The results of the exercises we practiced on each other felt like magic. It was empowering to take control of the limiting beliefs that had long restricted me. With each module I took, my confidence grew.
Completing the clinical internship was a wonderful opportunity to apply the skills and tools I learned in the program within a supportive environment. Feedback from my fellow interns and Marla Brucker was invaluable in helping me learn to trust my intuition and discover my personal style as a hypnotherapist. Many people say the certification program is life-changing, and I initially thought that might be an exaggeration until I experienced it firsthand. MIOH has created a wonderfully supportive community among its instructors, graduates, and students. I feel fortunate to be part of this community and look forward to future learning opportunities with MIOH. ~ R. Henkins

Letter from the Executive Director

Hi Everyone,
Do you ever feel lost or unsure of what to do next?
It’s something I hear all the time. People get caught in loops of thinking about what they should be doing… while quietly limiting themselves with stories they’ve carried from the past.
It reminds me of The Wizard of Oz.
Even though the Wizard turned out to be just an ordinary man, what he really did was extraordinary - he helped Dorothy and her friends see themselves differently. He didn’t give them anything they didn’t already have… he helped them change their story.
And that changed everything.
Each had felt lost, looking outside themselves for answers. The Wizard
impressed upon Dorothy that she couldn’t find her way home until she first found her way back to herself; the answers were in her heart.
Reimagining ourselves as remarkable beings opens incredible possibilities. The answers are always within us. We don’t always give ourselves permission to look.
"If ever I go looking for my heart’s desire, I won’t look any further than my own backyard… because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with." ~ Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.
