Did You Know?

Blueberries Help Prevent Memory Loss:
The key to preventing memory lapses is fresh fruit!  Eating blueberries increases recall in people who are more likely to develop dementia, according to a study published in the journal Nutrients. The findings suggest that ½ cup of blueberries daily lowers risk of memory loss, due to anthocyanidins and procyanidins — two powerful plant compounds that boost brain cell signaling and curb inflammation that can lead to memory impairments.

Eat Fruit – Be Happy!
Recent finding: People who ate fruit most often scored highest for mental well-being and had the lowest scores for depression. On the other hand, the more frequently people ate savory snacks such as chips, which are low in nutrients, the more likely there were to report lower mental well-being and frequent "everyday mental lapses" such as forgetting why they walked into a room, where they had just left an object or trying to remember the name of someone. Note: the benefit was specific to frequency of eating fruit, not quantity of fruit eaten --- and to fruits, not vegetables.  Reason: Nutrients in vegetables, which also are known to benefit mood and cognition, often are lost during cooking…and most vegetables are eaten cooked; whereas fruits, usually are eaten raw. (British Journal of Nutrition)

Tame Tiredness by Sniffing Rosemary:
Studies show that taking just a few whiffs of rosemary’s scent increases alertness by 37% and reduces drowsiness by 32%. Researchers credit its unique aromatic compounds, which trigger the release of stimulating beta brain waves that restore your pep. (The Journal of Complementary Therapies

Boost Focus by Sipping of Water:
Keep a glass of water by your side and take five sips every 20 minutes or so. This simple trick makes it significantly easier to focus on what you’re working on or reading. Water adds moisture to your tongue makes your mouth more comfortable, which spurs the release of focus-enhancing dopamine. Bonus: University of Illinois scientists say upping your water intake by at least a cup a day trims 205 calories from your daily diet. (Research study: University of East London)

Inspirational Quotes

Live the story you want others to believe, not the crap you keep telling yourself.

It’s OK to talk to yourself…and OK to answer yourself. But sad when you have to repeat what you said because you weren’t listening!!!

Accept the challenge you may be facing; it may become your greatest gift… adversities become your most valuable lessons.

"Those who look around themselves are intelligent; those who look within are wise." ~ Matshona Dhliwayo

Letter from the Executive Director

Hi Everyone,

"If there is one thing you should remember, it’s that you are worthy of all the love and joy in the world," ~ Tina Turner

Although she’s no longer with us, Tina Turner’s talent and wisdom will live on. Her philosophy in life was to embrace joy, positivity, and love, no matter what you had to go through to get there.

Tina’s vision was to constantly work on becoming a better version of herself. She felt that her positive attitude of always focusing on the present moment kept her going even when she was trapped in cycles of negativity.

No matter the intensity of her suffering, she recognized that she may not have had control over what came her way, yet, she did have control over how she responded…embracing what she could control, along with her positive attitude and inner strength. Her philosophy was, "When you can see yourself and your life clearly, you can transform any situation."

Tina discovered joy in lifting others through her music and positive view on life. She firmly believed that when we help uplift others, we become uplifted. She felt that showing compassion allows us to connect on a different emotional and spiritual level, which can take us to a place where our differences fade. Tina believed it is time for the world to move past divisions and into deeper connections. She advocated that we work together to solve problems. She was hopeful that we will all come together one day to heal the world.

"Happiness is found within, and when you realize that and work to spread kindness to all living beings, that goodness will come back to you again and again!" ~Tina Turner

Thank you, Tina
