Drinking Coffee May Make You Spend More: Consuming a typical caffeinated beverage before shopping leads to purchasing more, especially items associated with pleasure, such as scented candles, fragrances, massages, etc., rather than necessities. Reason: Caffeine intake enhances arousal, which enhances the perception of product features and increases purchases of pleasurable products. (Study, University of South Florida, Tampa, published in Journal of Marketing.)
Choose a Different Tire: New tires can actually lower gas mileage because more rubber laterally meets the road. If getting better mileage is important to you, consider shopping for what the industry calls low-rolling-resistance tires, which are manufactured to lessen the friction of the tires against the road. Some estimates suggest they can improve fuel economy up to 11 percent. Be sure to check their safety ratings for snow and rain, but their reputations are generally good.
Enhance Memory and Alertness: Inhale the aroma of lavender or mint for a quick memory lift. Researchers noted that compounds in those plant herbs sharpen memory and alertness. They also suggest that focusing on smelling pleasant odors daily can optimize brain function to reduce memory lapses and dementia risk. (Research in Nutrients from the University of California in San Francisco.)
Stay Hydrated - Slip on a Scarf: During winter, you could cut your fluid losses by up to 42 percent by covering your mouth with a cozy scarf when you head outside. This chill-chasing method encourages you to breathe through your nose, which lowers the amount of moisture you lose when you inhale and exhale cold air through your mouth. (Swedish research in the journal of Rhinology.)
