Did You Know?

3 Easy Ways to Stop Sleeplessness

Ever gotten into bed, excited to get a good night’s sleep, only to find yourself tossing and turning? Peaceful sleep can feel totally elusive making mornings a  groggy mess. Below are three simple natural strategies to help you doze off faster, sleep more soundly, and wake up well rested.

Trouble Falling Asleep? Take a Steamy Shower:
On a cool night, it feels so good to crawl into bed after taking a warm shower or bath. Scientists have found that by doing so, it will help stop sleeplessness. Research in Sleep Medicine from the University of Texas found that people who showered or soaked in a tub for 10 minutes one to two hours before bed fell asleep faster. The reason – a comfortable hot shower or bath, pulls heat out of your core to the skin’s surface in an attempt to cool down, thus lowering your internal temperature to levels that mimic what you experience during a state of deep sleep, making it easier to doze off.

Tossing and Turning:
Swiss researchers discovered a trick that blocks nighttime restlessness: Imagine a fish diving deep. When people visualized a fish swimming into deeper and deeper waters, they spent more time asleep and increased their sleep delta-waves (your body’s deepest, most restful stage of slumber). The study, published in the journal Sleep, credits this simple "self-hypnosis" technique with calming the centers of the brain responsible for attaining the deepest levels of rest.

Wake Up too Early? Wear Fuzzy Socks:
Women in Korea traditionally wear comfy "bed socks" to encourage better sleep, Researchers found the trick really works; as the brain interprets feet that are warm as a signal to stay in a state of slumber. The effect was so impressive, they found that those who kept their feet a few degrees warmer than the rest of their body slept up to 32 minutes longer. (Journal of Physiological Anthropology.)

Inspirational Quotes

May the tears you cried in 2022 water the seeds you’re planting in 2023.

"It’s worth remembering that it is often the small steps, not the giant leaps, that bring about the most lasting change." ~ Queen Elizabeth ll, 1926 – 2022

"Nothing has power over you other than that which you give it through your conscious thoughts." ~ Tony Robbins

TELECRASTINATION (tel e kras tin ay' shun): The act of always letting the phone ring at least twice before you pick it up, even when you're only six inches away.

Testimonials

"Thank you so much for everything you have helped me with over the past few months, as when you helped me with anxiety, as well as some very difficult personal issues. I have told everyone about you and our sessions and how life changing it has been! Not only do the daily exercises help but you were absolutely amazing. I really appreciate all of your kindness, love, support and guidance. You are such a blessing to me." ~ Sammy K.

Letter from the Executive Director

Hi Everyone,

The gift of giving is a gift in itself...

The holidays are a wonderful time of giving. It’s not only a time to be thankful for what we have but also to give to others who may be less fortunate than yourself.

I’m trying to teach my young grandchildren the value of giving. Like many other children, they are fortunate to have a lot of toys, yet walking through a toy store, children always seem to want more, and eventually, more doesn’t seem enough.

I, too, was one of those children; therefore, in reflection, I’m reminded of a saying from Bruce Lee:

"Instead of buying your children all the things you never had, you should teach them all the things you were never taught. Material items wear out, but knowledge stays."

I tell my grandchildren that when they want a new toy, choose a slightly used toy they own, and give or donate it to another child who doesn’t have much. That child’s smile will say it all.

Any simple act of kindness makes a difference
